On Location in France
Day 5
Sponsored by: Power-Glide
Homeschool.com Jr. Media Team spent a whole afternoon
strolling through the Monet's spectacular gardens at his home in Giverny, France. They felt as if they were
walking through one of his famous paintings. Monet once remarked that his
gardens were his greatest masterpiece.

The countryside of the Loire Valley was laced with chateaus and
castles. The ruins at the castle at Loche with its underground passageways
and dungeon was a particular favorite.

The walls were covered with medieval graffiti left by the political
prisoners of this dark dungeon.

It was hard for the team to imagine any young man actually
walking around in this heavy suit of armor -- we think Quinn could do
it!

Through the genius of Dr. Robert Blair, foreign language instruction has taken a giant step... backwards!
Power-Glide moves language instruction back to the way a child learns languages best... and it works! The Power-Glide program is based on the concept of immersing into the "how" of learning. Power-Glide has helped over 90,000 home study students acquire a new language.
Can you imagine toddlers...
...learning grammar rules before they start communicating? Children all over the world acquire their native language before they begin a formal education. This process is called "natural language acquisition." Natural language acquisition is the "how to" stage of speaking applying communication encouraged by actual usage and cultural reinforcements. When a child is sent off to school or they begin homeschooling, they are no longer taught "how" to speak. Instead, they are taught "why" they speak and the construction of speech (grammar rules, sentence structure, vocabulary, and on and on). Power-Glide believes
you can't memorize a foreign language. Traditional schools and other programs often teach second languages opposite from how we naturally acquired our first language. Instead of allowing a child to learn the "how" first, they plunge students into the "why" of the language. The student is then immediately faced with boring rote memorization and the agony of grammar rules and structure. For most young children, the traditional "why" methodology results in a disinterest that can span their entire foreign language experience!
