LeapFrog's Tag™ Reading System transforms the reading experience for children ages 4 to 8 by bringing storybooks to life. The Tag™ is a new gadget for children that does all the work of a teacher: it gives phonics lessons, sounds out words, sings songs, and most importantly, keeps track of the student's progress. As children explore books with the Tag™ Reader, they encounter well-loved characters and leveled learning activities that adjust automatically to their own pace, helping their confidence and love of reading bloom.

As children touch the Tag™ Reader to the pages of specially printed storybooks, a small camera in the tip "reads" the pages, enabling children to hear words and stories aloud.  When the device touches different areas of the book, the audio part of the gadget is then activated. When it touches a word, for example, it will read it aloud. Touching photos activates character dialogue, and certain pages have phonics lessons and games.

What is wonderful about this system is that parents get to participate too. The pen can be hooked up to a PC, Mac or Windows, and all information pertaining to what the child has learned with the Tag™ device can be downloaded. The data displayed is then displayed in an application for parents that tracks the child's progress, what the child spends time on in the books, and much more.

Unlike other systems, this Tag™ reader immediately seems to pick up what book it is reading and doesn't require constant hovering over icons to make it do what you want. RINDIN the Puffer is a wonderful inspiring story about an odd looking puffer fish with googly eyes and no chin! This fun story begins with Rindin being the target of a joke, just for being different.  However, when the bullies meet up with a hungry barracuda, Rindin saves the day!  This beautifully illustrated hard-back book, along with the award-winning DVD, shows children the importance of ‘being yourself' while respecting individual differences in others. This set is a great way to inspire children to see peers in a positive new light and be more tolerant of others.

What we really loved about this storybook and DVD were the wonderful principles behind the story combined with the beautiful illustrations and animation. The DVD has such an amazing quality and shows just like any other animated film you'd see in the movie theatre. There are so many learning and communication opportunities in this storybook and DVD, not to mention the accompanying Resource Guide, which can be downloaded from their site. The Rindin Resource Guide is an aid for adults that provide ideas on specially formulated questions you can ask your children to assist them in discovering the principles in the story. For each principle, there is a game the child can play to further impact the principle. This set includes a hardcover book with 36 colorful pages and bonus DVD.

What we enjoyed about this DVD was that there are nearly 50 words/phrases in Volume 1, which covers those topics most important to children, like important members of the family, rooms in the home, favorite drinks and food items, fun places like the park and activities such as swimming. It even includes simple sentences for I want, I like and I don't like. For more mature viewers, they even include a Rapid Review at the end of the DVD. It is engaging for little ones and for adults too.
