Math + Science = 21st Century Success

Our Sponsor: PCS Edventures.com
On September 27, 2000, John Glenn made national headlines again--this time here on earth. Glenn, former Senator and Astronaut and now Chairman of "The National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching in the 21st Century," presented a very alarming report to Richard Riley, Secretary of Education, titled "Before It's Too Late."

Every parent of a school age child needs to know the primary message of the Glenn Commission's report which states: "America's students must improve their performance in math and science if they are to succeed in today's world." The Commission is convinced that the future well-being of our nation and its citizens depends not just on how well we educate our children generally, but specifically on how well we educate our children in mathematics and science.

The Glenn Commission lists four reasons why it is critical for children to have strong math and science skills if they are to succeed in the 21st century:

(1) The rapid pace of change in both the increasingly interdependent global economy and in the American work place demands widespread mathematics and science related knowledge and abilities;

(2) Citizens need both mathematics and science for their everyday decision-making;

(3) Mathematics and science are inextricably linked to the nation's security interests; and

(4) The deeper, intrinsic values of mathematical and scientific knowledge shape and define our common life, history, and culture.

The report goes on to give statistics that our country's current K-12 math and science education is "unacceptable" and our children
are not "world-class learners."

In response to the Glenn Commission's findings, Homeschool.com and PCS Edventures.com have formed a joint project called, "Math + Science = 21st Century Success." Through this special partnership, Homeschool.com and PCS Edventures.com will, on a frequent basis, provide strategies and resources that will help children become "world-class" learners in Math and Science.

In this first installment of "Math + Science = 21st Century Success," we present a learning activity that will get your child started on a path to success.
