Meet A World Class Scientist

In This Issue:
  • One of the World's Most Inspiring Individuals
  • Homeschool.com's Jr. Media Team on location with JASON XIV
  • How to use JASON At-Home with all Different Styles of Homeschooling
  • JASON At-Home: World-Class Science Education

Last week, PBS featured two programs on one of the world's most inspiring individuals, Dr. Robert Ballard, the scientist who found the Titanic and founder of The JASON Project.

Dr. Ballard has a passion for exploring our world's most fascinating geographic locations and ecological systems using the latest technologies. Whether beneath the vast depths of the ocean or buried deep within a glacier, Dr. Ballard's dedication to helping others learn more about the planet Earth puts science within reach and makes finding solutions to the environmental issues facing our world less daunting.

Educating all children to understand and appreciate the impact of science and scientific discoveries in relationship to the Earth's future ensures their future.

Help your child build a strong foundation in science by exploring virtually with the JASON Team on this year's JASON Project expedition, JASON XIV: From Shore to Sea - A Discovery of
California's Channel Island region.

Meet Homeschool.com's Jr. Media Team
On Location with JASON XIV

In January 2003, three of Homeschool.com's Jr. Media Team members will travel to The Channel Islands in Southern California to interview the JASON XIV scientific team. Throughout the year your child will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with our team as they use the JASON XIV At-Home program. Read the books the team is reading, do the experiments they are they doing, and join them at Team JASON Online!

Homeschool.com's Jr. Media Team

Randall - Age 12
I have been a homeschooler my whole life. I like to spend my free time training my Border Collie, Willa for agility competitions.

Two years ago, as a member of the Jr. Media Team, I went to Hawaii to interview the JASON XII team. I met Dr. Ballard next to the Steam Banks on the big island of Hawaii and asked him if he ever found any skeletons or jewelry when he discovered the Titanic.

To find out what Dr. Ballard said click here.

Dr. Ballard got me so excited about science that when I got back home I wanted to get other kids involved. This past February, on a local television show, I showed kids how to join the JASON expedition by using their computers at home and I can't wait to share JASON experiences with you on Team JASON Online this next year!

You can e-mail Randall at: randall@homeschool.com

Madison - Age 9
Hi!  I am Madison and a homeschooler like you. I love reading... especially, R. L. Stine books. I also love to write and hope to publish some of my own stories one day. One of my favorite things to do is explore nature and then write about some of the strange things I see. I love science... even the yucky, slimy, scary stuff and just recently proved it by going on television with Mad Science and sticking my hands in some really gooey experiments.

I have participated with my family in two JASON expeditions and even got to go to Hawaii and hike around on a volcanic crater at the same time Dr. Ballard was investigating with his team of scientists for JASON XII. I can't wait to go the Channel Islands and then write about the adventure!

You can e-mail Madison at: madison@homeschool.com

Adam - Age 15
Hi, my name is Adam. I am almost 16 and I have been homeschooled for as long as I can remember. I like to read about quantum physics (Richard Feynman is cool!) and the monkeys of the Congo (the life work of Dr. Jane Goodall and the chimpanzees of Gombe National Park, Tanzania, to be specific). My nickname is Moozie. I have a cat named Merlyn who loves cheese and I am a serious guitarist and performing artist. My favorite kind of music is the stuff that they don't play on the radio.

My first JASON Project experience was 8 years ago with JASON V, when Dr. Ballard took his team to Belize. After participating in JASON for so many years, it is very exciting to be going along on JASON XIV as a member of Homeschool.com's Jr. Media Team. The Channel Islands are fascinating and I am very interested in learning about seals and their habitat. I am looking forward to this year's study and hope you are too. Send me a note about the cool things you are doing in your JASON adventures. See ya at Team JASON Online!

Join The JASON At-Home Adventure Today!

In 1986, Dr. Robert Ballard peered into the murky darkness at the hull of the R.M.S Titanic and asked himself, "Why only me?" Three years later, his dream of sharing the wonder of exploration and discovery became reality when thousands of children were first able to join him on real research projects and take part in substantive exchanges with researchers.

Each year, Dr. Ballard and his world-renowned JASON team mount a major scientific expedition in one or more of the Earth's most fascinating places. In 2002-2003, JASON XIV Shore to Sea will bring homeschoolers virtually to the unique Channel Islands region of California.

Now homeschoolers can become scientists by actively engaging in hands-on research by following the example of real researchers! Complete fascinating experiments at home using the award-winning JASON Project curriculum and interactive program.
Join the JASON XIV Research Team as they look at:

  • History of maritime culture in California's Channel Island region

  • Culture of Native Chumash

  • Marine and terrestrial ecosystems of the Channel Islands

  • Tools and methods of scientific research

  • Geology and geologic history

  • Watershed studies

  • Inter-relationships of ecosystems

  • Management and monitoring of natural resources

Available exclusively through Homeschool.com, the complete year-long JASON XIV At-Home program is available for $75.00 per family.
