Laurel Springs catalog It turns out that the school thinks all of its students are stars... Laurel Springs School specializes in customized curriculum, which means every student can learn at their own pace, in a way that works best for them. The school is a WASC, NISAC and NCAA approved distance learning program, which utilizes live teachers and a learning styles inventory to complement and support its curriculum. The Learning Style Profile measures your child's talents, interests, and learning environment, as well as the way he or she intakes and processes information. The faculty and staff of the school then use that profile to create the curriculum for each individual student. This system is especially good for special needs students, gifted/talented students, homeschoolers, and teen athletes and stars (hence the nickname "School to the Stars.") Homeschoolers benefit from the ready-to-use format of the school's program and curriculum, which includes all the basics such as books, study guides, accreditation, transcripts and diplomas. Students at the school also have access to pre-assessment, enrollment and college counseling, and various levels of teacher service and interaction. Like its curriculum, this system allows each family to receive as much support as they need. They have a family newsletter, a high school newsletter and a "teen voice" newsletter, to stay connected. They also have a "family center," premiering soon on their website. The flexibility of the program works well for homeschoolers who often use an adaptable schedule to accommodate activities and commitments that supplement their learning such as sports, field trips, and community service. Teachers and/or tutors are readily available via email, telephone, or on location, and the Web-based classes allow students to work from their home or on the road. Parents facilitate the instruction of the material and are assisted by a Laurel Springs teacher. Students can develop their own elective portfolio, which allows for student-designed electives such as research, tutorials, workshops, seminars, apprenticeships, travel, conferences, private classes, religious studies, community service, and local community college courses. The all-inclusive nature of the program and the fact that many homeschoolers are self-directed means that parents' schedules can be more flexible as well, especially with older students. This allows homeschoolers to continue on with homeschooling past the elementary school years, when many homeschooling parents begin to question their ability to proceed. In addition to the flexibility of the curriculum, the program itself allows students to enroll at any time of the year and begin online classes immediately, although all courses are divided into thirty-six lessons over a one-year period. Students can sign on for an entire program or take just one semester, or one class. The elementary school curriculum combines textbooks and projects for courses that allow children time for exploration, emotional growth, and physical development. The junior high curriculum also includes Choices (learning style-based activities), and Online courses, and the high school program provides a complete 9-12 program and academic diploma. The school also offers amenities such as a school yearbook, prom, and graduation ceremony every year! Laurel Springs encourages interaction between its students and offers a pen pal program that pairs students with each other from around the globe as well as a student-created newsletter that allows students to express themselves, their talents, and their accomplishments. The school views all its students as special and works with families to create a program and curriculum that works best for them. As the previous newsletter mentioned, the program has worked for many of today's most ambitious and successful young people. It could work just as well for your child, because in the eyes of the school, all children are stars.
