I'm often surprised by the range of families that use Time4Learning because
they have such radically different challenges and approaches to
homeschooling. Eclectic homeschoolers, unschoolers, and curriculum
followers are all able to include Time4Learning in their
homeschooling programs, and it works for them in different ways.
To better understand this, I had a discussion with two
homeschooling moms: Kelly and Mary. I learned a few interesting
things that I thought I would share.
Kelly is a mother of six, each with very different learning
requirements. Mary is a mother of four who initially
homeschooled with a strictly faith-based curriculum and then
incorporated Time4Learning.

It thrills me that
Time4Learning's student-paced visual learning materials are a useful
curriculum in so many different situations.

A Time4Learning member who really stands out to me is Kelly, who has
been with us since 2006. I learned from her to better appreciate
the diversity that occurs within a family and the particular
concerns of the large homeschooling families. She uses our online
curriculum to homeschool six children, each with unique educational
needs:

Kelly uses Time4Learning for:
-
Two gifted sons: "Both boys have benefited from
being able to work at grade levels above what you might
expect and to proceed at a faster pace. Time4Learning
was a terrific way for me to extend their studies when I
didn't have time to personally provide the "more" they
were craving."
-
A daughter with reading challenges: "She has
always found learning challenging. Reading comprehension
was an issue with her, so textbooks were not an
effective method. She almost became a different person
when we started using Time4Learning! The way the lessons
are presented was a perfect fit for her, and she was
finally able to thrive as a student."
-
A daughter with different learning levels in math and
reading: "She has been reading since she was three
and appears to be a gifted writer, but math is a
challenge for her. As a fifth grader, she was working on
third grade arithmetic and seventh grade language arts.
It's great to be able to customize her learning
experience!"
-
A son with Down
Syndrome: "He
is now five and "formally" a kindergartner. He needs
each concept presented to him in a variety of ways,
including books, DVDs, hands-on activities and computer
programs. I use Time4Learning's preschool and
kindergarten lessons as part of the package. I love
being able to choose only the lessons he needs, and to
skip between grade levels."
-
A daughter with "typical" learning skills: "For
her, the main advantage of Time4Learning is that she
enjoys the lessons so much! We use a variety of
curriculum, but Time4Learning is the one thing we do
every, single day... even if that's ALL we have time
for."

Mary, a member since 2007, has helped me understand her sensitivities
and educational priorities. She fondly talks about how Time4Learning changed
how she homeschools her four boys.
Like many Christian
homeschoolers, Mary started out with a faith-based curriculum. But as
her children grew older, she wanted to diversify their education and try
something new. As soon as she saw how excited her kids got when it was
time to do their lessons, she was hooked. They were understanding the
material, engaging with the lessons and their test scores were getting
better. "It made me want to kiss my computer!", she said.

Mary explains how she handles lessons that don't agree with her
beliefs:
"You embrace this as a teachable moment. A teachable moment happens
when you take an imperfect situation and turn it into an incredible
opportunity to teach our children about our worldview, our politics,
our beliefs. It allows our children to have a safe place to ask
questions and share thoughts.
After all, one day your child is going to be exposed to things
contrary to your families worldview. Teachable moments prepare your
children like no other curriculum ever could." |
