Distance education can offer students a more personalized, and more convenient method of studying, which explains its increasing popularity and the increase in available choices. However not all of the choices are of the same quality.

Citizens' High School is one choice supported with more than twenty years of accreditation, which allows students to receive a high school diploma while still having access to many of the options that make distance education desirable:

1. High School Diploma – Not A GED

  • Citizens' High School has been accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council since January 1984.

  • Accreditation ensures that the institution is financially sound and offers an approved program of study with qualified instructors, adequate facilities and equipment, and approved recruitment and admissions standards.

  • Accreditation allows students the opportunity to earn an actual, accredited high school diploma, rather than a General Education Degree.

2. Curriculum

  • Students can follow either a General or Academic Studies Program and choose from a number of electives in addition to the core curriculum which includes English, math, science, and social studies.

  • Elective choices include Business Accounting, Entrepreneurship & Marketing, Spanish, Food and Nutrition, Skills for Workplace Success, Astronomy, Zoology, Psychology, and more.

  • The General Study Program is designed for students seeking a diploma for employment opportunities after graduation and students may select electives from a wide range of business/technical subjects designed to enhance a student's marketable skills.

  • The Academic Study Program is designed for students planning to continue in a post secondary school or training program after graduation and electives are more focused in math, science, and other advanced academic subjects.

  • Each subject uses Independent Study Guides, which have been built around the latest edition of standard high school textbooks from major educational publishers.

3. Makeup Credits/Summer School

  • All of Citizens' High School courses are available individually.

  • The Individual Course Program allows students to complete these courses for personal enhancement or to fulfill graduation requirements from the student's local high school.

  • Written approval from a high school counselor or principal must be obtained before enrolling in a Citizens' High School Individual Course.

4. Individualized Instruction

  • Citizens' will work with families to plan an appropriate educational program according to the needs and plans for the future.

  • During the course of study, students are given self-check exercises, which allows them to check what they have learned and students can also ask for extra help from the teacher or the school.

  • The course study guides include the course examinations which are completed on the open book principle and are completed when the student feels ready.

  • Teachers correct the exams and add helpful comments and suggestions if needed.

5. Self-paced Learning

  • Citizens’ High School observes a year-round calendar, which means that students may begin and complete coursework and grade levels at their own pace.

  • Students may complete each course as rapidly as they wish or can take up to the three years given to complete the entire program.

  • Depending upon the number of courses required, a reasonably motivated student could complete an academic year in as little as four months!

Although online and distance learning are fast becoming popular choices for individualized learning, it is important to remember that the quality of education needs to be maintained, which is something that an accredited school can offer.
