When it comes to
education all families want the best for their children, which is the reason
many families choose homeschooling. However, some homeschoolers select
non-traditional schooling in order to meet the needs of their lifestyle as well,
such as professional athletes and actors.
Laurel Springs is often called the “School to the Stars” because of
its pool of famous alumni, yet their program works for all students. All
children are “stars” in their own right - and the dream of parents is that each
child reaches for and achieves their fullest potential. Many young actors,
athletes and scholars are doing just that - they are turning to homeschooling
because it offers the flexibility to learn while pursuing their dreams, and to
pursue their dreams through learning!
Kristen Stewart, star of the upcoming film
Twilight; Cole & Dylan Sprouse, who are the stars of the Disney
Channel series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody; and Hayden Panettiere,
who plays Claire Bennet in the television show Heroes, have all been
homeschooled in order to pursue their acting careers. What’s more interesting is
that they’ve all chosen Laurel Springs School to meet their demanding schedules
and demanding education goals, and they’re not alone (see list
below).

A major concern for celebrity kids is "are they
getting a quality education?" but this is also very true of homeschooling
families. Laurel Springs School is the school of choice for studio teachers and
children in film because of their customizable format, but this adaptability
works for all students as well. Not only do homeschoolers benefit from receiving
a quality education, they also benefit from the ready-to-use format of the
school's program and curriculum, which includes all the basics, such as books,
study guides, transcripts and diplomas.
The school views all its students as special and
works with families to create a program and curriculum that works best for
them. They offer:
1. Flexible Study Options
Study options include online and text-based courses
offered through the Aurora course delivery system that allows students to
view and work on lessons at their own online desk.
Teachers and staff work closely with parents, studio
teachers, and students, so that they can connect from anywhere in the world
through the Internet or by fax, phone or mail.
The program allows students to enroll at any time of
the year and begin online classes immediately and students can sign on for an
entire program or take just one semester, or one class.
Laurel Springs School specializes in customized
curriculum, with students completing a Learning Style Profile that measures a
child's talents, interests, and learning environment, as well as information
processing. The profile is used to create the curriculum for each individual
student.
2. College Prep High School Courses
In addition to Honors and AP courses, students can
select one of two College Prep Tracks to follow to prepare for admission to
higher education.
College Prep Track 1 is in preparation for admission
into moderately selective colleges and requires 4 years of English, history, and
electives, as well as 3 years of math, and 2 years each of science, foreign
language and physical education.
College Prep Track 2 is a more rigorous course for
applying to highly selective colleges. This program is similar to the other
track but has more demands for science, foreign language, and science
labs.
College Counseling is also provided by Enrollment
Advisors to all High School students at Laurel Springs. They’ll even help with
recommendations and college applications!
Over 85% of the students at Laurel Springs attend
the college of their choice and many receive substantial scholarships. (The
remaining students usually choose to pursue a career in acting, dancing or
sports, many returning to college after achieving their professional
dreams)
3. Full Accreditation &
Offerings
Laurel Springs is accredited by the
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is an NISAC and NCAA
approved distance learning program. They have also seen student matriculation to
top colleges such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley, Columbia and
many more.
Students can develop their own elective portfolio,
which allows for student-designed electives such as research, apprenticeships,
travel, conferences, private classes, religious studies, community service, and
local community college courses.
The school offers transfer credits, dual enrollment,
credit recovery and a high school diploma in addition to Honors and AP classes.
4. Exceptional Student Services with Support and
Encouragement
Laurel Springs provides access to student progress
so that parents can take on a supportive and encouraging role in the
process.
A color-coding scheme details which lessons have
been completed, which are in progress, and which are yet-to-be-started.
Teacher comments, updated grades and parent
conferences are offered to help students and families to be aware of areas of
strength and potential areas for growth.
Both coursework and technical questions can be
handed through the online system or through email.
Graduates are also offered a well-deserved prom and
graduation ceremony that celebrate their accomplishments as they head into their
bright and expanding future.
What allow children to achieve their goals in life
are a supportive family, and a home education program that is as diverse and
flexible as they are. With a powerful message and core ideal of “academic and
creative excellence," it’s no wonder so many “stars” choose Laurel Springs
School as the educational companion that will help guide them into their
bountiful futures.
