A Trip to: Denver, CO

Where to Eat in Denver, Colorado

.

Dinner in the Lost City of Atlantis, the Ruins of Machu Picchu, & the African Serengeti Plain. Café Odyssey is not just a restaurant, but an educational experience. We asked the manager, for a brief tour so that we could choose a dining adventure among the three theme areas:

The Lost City of Atlantis
We walked through the underwater world of Atlantis, a replica of the ruined mythical city and advanced civilization that existed in the Aegean Sea thousands of years ago. The dining room is decorated with beautiful rock and coral formations, antiquities from the lost city of Atlantis, frescoes depicting the rise and fall of Atlantis, and aquariums housing an array of tropical fish. Watch carefully and you will see dolphins, stingrays and giant octopi swim by, followed closely by a Portuguese Man of War that casts its tentacles across the room (all courtesy of video projection). Listen for that volcano rumbling in the distance - it suggests what caused the demise of Atlantis.

The Incan Ruins of Machu Picchu
Here, the dining room is transformed into an archaeological dig site of ancient temples and plazas high up in the Andes Mountains of Peru in South America. This was the site of the ancient city of the Incas that was so well hidden it eluded Spanish conquistadors. Machu Picchu fell victim to the ravages of civil war and disease. It remained "undiscovered" for 400 years until an American explorer found it in 1911. As you dine, you sit among Incan stone structures and experience the illusion of life in an Incan village.

The Serengeti Desert Plains of Africa
Because of my son's penchant for wild animals, we decided to eat in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Africa, completely forgetting we were in the middle of downtown Denver, Colorado! We were seated at a table on a 1930's style verandah surrounded by the vast grasslands of the savanna. African masks, stone carvings, and the soft whir of ceiling fans completed the scene. As we perused the menu we were aware that the sun was rising on the Serengeti plain. At daybreak, we watched as herds of wildebeest, impalas, antelopes and gazelles passed by. Our waiter took our order and served our drinks with a delicious parsley-herb bread. Prides of lions stalked their prey in the distance, and zebras, giraffes, elephants and ostriches passed by, pausing to refresh themselves at a lake. Our dinner was served as we continued to be entertained by our surroundings. Contrary to what you might expect, the menu at Café Odyssey does not reflect what one might find on a real visit to Africa - no fried grasshoppers here. While the menu offers some diversity, most of the selections are standard fare. As night fell in the dining room, we could hear lions roaring, birds singing and African drums pounding.
