    Posted: 16/Apr/2012 at 7:17am
Hello: I'm a retired Overseas American. We live in Colombia, South America. Our daughter is finishing 5th grade and
the Private school she attends will probably close in June. Because of our limited income, and, also, because of the
superior education available to her with Home Schooling, my wife and I are very interested in any recommendations,
feedback, etc., the people on this Forum can give us, about Accredited Distance Learning Schools, for 6th grade, full time students.

I discovered this web site last night and did some reading, and I am aware of schools such as Seascape, Calvert and a few others and would like to get feedback, from people who have used those schools and other schools.

Our priorities are: (a) Accredited (b) Quality (c) Our finances

Our daughter is bilingual (English and Spanish). For the past 4 school years, she has been in a school where the primary language is Spanish. I suspect her English Grammar skills have weakened, during those 4 school years. Other than that, she is an excellent student.

I discovered Texas Tech University, via a link on this web site this morning, and have just sent them an email, requesting information about total costs and whether or not they have a Payment Plan. I suspect they are too expensive for our budget at this time.

Thank you, for your time and help and thanks to HomeSchool.com for this great web site, with so much information available to newbies like my wife and I.

Follow on to my first post: Yesterday, I called Texas Tech University ISD (TTUISD) and Lady Luck was with me. The woman who answered my call is the Principal of the Elementary and Middle Schools. If we can do it, financially, we will enroll our daughter in the 6th grade there, starting in August or September (She will finish 5th grade in a Private school here, in June).

Before I called TTUISD I had looked at the prices of the books for the 6th grade school year and almost had a Heart Attack.  Shocked  Several of those books were Used.  Almost the price of Tuition and Fees, for one Semester, when you add Shipping.

The Principal told me they are working on getting the Middle School classes online (the High School classes are already available online), but she does not know if that work will be finished by August or September. If so, that will be a blessing for us.

She also told me that she can "Multi Grade" our daughter. For example, I suspect DD is advanced, in Math and Science, because the Colombian government is very demanding, with the subjects required in Elementary and Secondary schools and they take more subjects here, than in the USA.

Very glad to be here in this Forum and I have already learned so much here, in just a few days. Big smile

Why not do what many (most) of us do and homeschool your daughter yourself?   It's not only much cheaper, it's better.

We use Seascape Private School. I absolutely recommend them if you do decide to enroll in a distance learning program, instead of homeschooling on your own. They are an accredited private school and they send all the curriculum needed for the year.  They tailor the programs to what the student needs academically. They will mix and match academic levels in one grade so that the student is comfortable in every subject.  We didn't pay for the program in full and instead used their interest free payment plan which includes shipping, so I find them to be very affordable.  I mean, a teacher is assigned to each student and he or she grades everything and helps your child if they need it and they send progress reports and they also send a daily schedule.

@CNBarnes We will be doing Home School, for the Colombian government requirements. Possibly in the future, we will do Home Schooling for the Texas requirements, as you suggest. We must comply with both requirements.   Thank you, for your comments!
