Hi, All!

Yup!  Here in San Antonio, and realizing that homeschooling is, most likely, in my not-so-distant future and I could REALLY  use some direction.

The scenario:

My daughter is 11 and attending her 1st year of middle school.  Straight-A student.  Pre-AP/ GT.  Hates school.

Last year she started begging me to home school.  I encouraged her to give Middle School a try, just to see what it was like and if it was any better.  As we hit the 1/2-way point through the first grading period, her opinion hasn't changed.  If she's got straight A's at the end of the first grading period (no problem there) and she still really doesn't like school, I told her that she could home school.

She's obsessed with dancing and performing and has been since age 2.  She does 20 hours/ wk of dance, plus voice, plus guitar, plus acting.  I know this is hard to fathom, but the reason that she wants to home school is that she doesn't want to spend 8 hours a day in school working on what she feels she can finish in a few hours per day.  THEN, of course, she could add in more time at the dance studio.  She has lots of friends, but her main social life is at her studio, and one of her best friends there is home schooled.

I have realized that, unlike me, she simply doesn't like school and it just isn't a good fit for her.  I have my own business where I work at home.  I have discussed with her that, if she home schools, she has to do her work in the morning, while I do the bulk of my work. She also knows that she's going to have to be self-motivated and self-disciplined.

I would like to find a good online program that will allow her to set her own pace, get in what she needs, have a good record of her grades.  She's determined to apply to the NYC High School for Music and Art (the "Fame" HS) and it's clear that her academics must be top notch in order for her to do this.  How does one end up with a transcript when one is homeschooled?  Are these transcripts taken seriously?

Also, I'd like the program to be flexible enough for her to get credit for learning things that interest her.  For example, she has a small business making and selling woven, beaded keychains.  She earned enough from her business this last year to pay for a dance masterclass in NYC this past summer!  She runs this business herself - buying all supplies, tracking them and selling them.  I'd like to teach her how to build her own website to sell these things, and it seems to me that THAT should count as credits in homeschooling.

What do you recommend?  We are not Christian, and I'm not interested in a faith-based program.

All advise is greatly appreciated!  Thanks SO much.

Welcome.

There's a school called Clonlara, which has an actual campus as well as a significant number of homeschoolers enrolled. Its founders were leaders in homeschooling over 30 years ago and are well respected. It isn't "on-line" in the sense of the students doing their work on the computer, but it is the most flexible, truly homeschool distance-learning school that I've seen.

I would suggest that you not automatically dismiss a program/package just because it's faith-based.   One of the benefits of homeschooling is that you can "cherry pick" the things you like out of a program and discard the rest.

Since the vast majority of homeschool programs are faith based, eliminating them will severely limit your options.

That's a very good suggestion.  I'll look around to see what the secular options are, then start looking at faith-based ones!

I'm open to all options!

I would definitely recommend you look into Time4Learning as an option.  It is great for working independently, and handles all the record-keeping, lesson planning, and quiz/test administering for you.  I bet it is something your daughter could make work for her in the mornings!!

Best of luck!!

Thanks! After 1 year of Middle School, we are definitely doing
homeschooling this coming fall, so I'm back into looking around. I'll take a
look at Time4Learning.
