I am new to home schooling and do not live in the US, and therefore do not have easy access to publications.  I am looking for good online reading/writing web sites for children ages 5-8, roughly K-2.  Any suggestions?  It can be a fee-based web site.

pbskids.com has some reading games.
readingeggs.com is also good but not free..

Have a try with beestar. DD's teacher sent us to it http://www.beestar.org. The math worksheet is FREE all year long for Grade 1-6 online. Other programs such as reading, vocabulary, science,etc, are 20 – 40$ per semester. These programs are full of real life world problems, challenging stuff to  help kids thinking. DD enjoy it. Hope it helps.

If you can, try http://www.headsprout.com/. Its not cheap but there is a payment plan option and the program has been AMAZING for us. I got my 4 year old set up with it because he was jealous of his older sister's virtual school's reading program, (Raz-kids which is alright for kids already reading and just improving) and he just loves it and in two months of a 20 minute lesson every day or so he is now reading at a first grade level! They guarantee after it is complete your child will be reading at a 2nd grade level. When he started, he was pretty good with most of his individual letter sounds but not all. Before  getting started with Headsprout he used Starfall, which is free, to help with letter sounds and we practiced sounding out the earliest Bob Books too. Time4Learning is cheaper than Headsprout and is useful as well but, while its broader in the subjects it teaches, doesn't move them as efficiently into reading.

1to1Tutor. employs full time teachers who are highly skilled in their respective subjects.  We allow your child to access own individual lesson plan according to their best time. We have got skilled teachers in Math, Algebra, Calculus etc.

starfall.com also has a subscription sister site called more.starfall.com which we use.  It is a very reasonable yearly fee and they have a lot of reading resources as well as math and other things.

Another site I have been loving recently is teacherspayteachers.com.  They have a lot of free and paid curriculum products which are developed and listed by teachers.  I have found some wonderful writing activities for free on that site as well as reading and math.
