An 11 year old homeschooler stars in a documentary

Today we would like to highlight a homeschooler's special accomplishments. This made the local paper "Roanoke Times".

At age of 9, Richard Warren did a homeschool project of a living history presentation. Since he had a love of the Civil War, he decided to do a presentation on a lesser known "hero", Richard Kirkland. Kirkland is also known as "The Angel of Marye's Heights" since he would cross the enemy's line to bring Union soldiers water during the Battle of Fredricksburg. He did this volunteerly.

Richard did such a wonderful portrayal, that he caught the eye of Michael Aubreht, a historian and author. Mr. Aubreht took the video Richard's mom made of his presentation and put it on his blog. In addition, Richard has had numerous opportunities and occasions to re-enact his presentation.

Film maker Clint Ross became interested in creating a documentary on the Civil War and wished to include a piece on Richard Kirkland, so he contacted Richard Warren through Mr. Aubreht. The film crew recently went to Salem, Virginia to film Richard's re-enactment of Kirkland. He was 11 years old when he did his movie debut.

Mr. Ross hopes to release this documentary on December 12th, the night before the Battle of Fredicksburg.

To read more on this, you can go to the original article in the "Roanoke Times", http://www.roanoke.com/community/salem/neighbors/wb/216666.

Congratulations to Richard and him family.
