Explore the Secrets of Mental
Math
These books are beneficial to
visual, auditory and/or kinesthetic learners.Author John Wang designed a special
child-sized abacus and games for children to learn addition and subtraction. At
the California Math Council’s 44th Annual Fall
Conference (2003), John’s daughter, Oriana, then a third-grader, demonstrated
her mental math skills. While the teachers used calculators, Oriana used her
mind to calculate answers and called them out before the teachers could finish
keying in the numbers. When Oriana was 4 years old, she and her teacher had a
contest of adding and subtracting five three digit-numbers, such as 578 + 369
– 521 + 988 – 472. Each time Oriana was able to call out the correct answer
before her teacher could finish keying in the numbers. (Ordering
