Dear Reader:

More and more parents are discovering the power of individualized instruction, and their children are enjoying the benefits. The Research Institute of America found that students who take classes online can increase their knowledge retention rate by 25-60%. The study theorizes that this is because students have more ownership of their learning experiences, and can review the material as necessary to master it. Yong Zhao, director of the Center for Teaching and Technology at Michigan State University, said, “The one-size-fits-all, mass-production, mass-market system is not serving our children well. Personalized learning should be the goal.”

Personalized learning has been the educational model at Laurel Springs School for over twenty years.  Our students have individual, personal connections with their teachers, and the curriculum is adjusted to match each student’s learning styles profile.  Unlike traditional bricks and mortar schools, and even most distance learning schools, Laurel Springs is deeply invested in the unique development of each of its students.  Zhao “envisions a future in which every student would have an individualized education program.” For Laurel Springs students, that future is now.

Laurel Springs School students are benefitting from one-on-one teacher relationships that lead to personalized learning. When Ms. Marilyn Mosley Gordanier founded Laurel Springs School in 1991, it was her vision for students to have access to an educational model that best fits their needs. Ms. Mosley Gordanier felt that “for true learning to take place, where the child is invested in their studies, the model needs to match the child, rather than the child being forced to match the instructional model.” At Laurel Springs, we provide you with the peace of mind of a fully-accredited school with curriculum and highly qualified teachers.  Home school parents can enrich the curriculum and incorporate local resources, but do not themselves have to be an expert on every subject. Our goal is to develop a home school program that fits your child’s intellectual, emotional, and developmental needs.

Many of our families choose Laurel Springs School for its ability to provide personalized teaching that is matched to a student’s pace. Susan D. Patrick, the president and chief executive officer of iNACOL (the International Association for K-12 Online Learning), emphasizes the importance of this approach: “With online learning, you can allow for that personalization to happen both in the instructional design of the course…but also in the ability of the teacher to provide extra support when a student is struggling, or accelerate one who is ahead.”  The Laurel Springs School leadership constantly advocates for educational experiences that focus on the unique abilities of each student.
