AMAZING Technology!

Last month I wrote that I thought fax machines were a combination of technology with a little bit of magic thrown in.

The most amazing recent invention (in my opinion) is not the fax machine, but the GPS system.  GPS is truly life changing!

Some basic information regarding GPS–

  • GPS stands for Global Positioning System
  • There are GPS satellites in space that transmit signals to equipment on the ground.
  • There are at least 24 GPS satellites working at all times.
  • The satellites are operated by the U.S. Air Force.
  • GPS operations depend on a very accurate time reference which is provided by atomic clocks.  Each GPS satellite has atomic clocks on board.
  • Each GPS satellite transmits data regarding location and current time.
  • These signals move at the speed of light
  • Automobile GPS machines contain a mapping system that is able to overlay your location onto a map and provide turn-by-turn directions.
  • Your GPS is constantly receiving satellite signals and updating your location so that it can give you accurate directions.

So there you have it!

Remember, fun learning is forever learning!
