Giving Homeschoolers A License to Thrive is a guest post, written by Adam Bell, from CollegePlus.org–
Remember the first time you got behind the wheel of a car? I do. My Dad took me out to the parking lot next to his office building, I climbed behind the wheel of our little red, stick-shift Datsun, and he patiently talked me through the process. In a humility check of considerable satisfaction to my parents and older sisters, I quickly learned my years as an expert backseat driver were of absolutely no help now that I was the one actually behind the wheel. In fact, my hands still sweat a bit remembering the exhilaration and nervousness of taking on that risk and responsibility of learning to drive.
A few years earlier, my Mom took over as my elementary school teacher when we embarked on a ‘1 year experiment’ as a homeschooling family back in the late 1980’s. I imagine she experienced some similar ‘sweaty hands’ sensations in taking on that new and daunting challenge. That decision, and the commitment it represented – which changed from 1 year to homeschooling my twin sister and me all the way through high school, changed my education and life trajectory dramatically. In short, it removed unnecessary boundaries and gave me a license to thrive.
Fast-forward 20 years…
The bravery of both of my parents in undertaking the effort of homeschooling – and teaching me how to drive to a somewhat lesser extent – still amazes me to this day. It was an incredible gift that prepared me to risk trying unfamiliar things and to approach problems differently from what society tells us is normal or ‘the right way’.
This is a nice story, but what does it have to do with me?
I’m glad you asked. Today I work for a company called CollegePlus where we engage with thousands of homeschool families each year with the goal of helping students achieve the extraordinary. For us it isn’t about our company so much as helping each student identify their life’s passions and connecting them with the best resources to equip them for success in realizing those passions.
It is our pleasure to recognize and reward all of the homeschool parents and families for their bravery and desire to do more than check an educational box, but equip students with the tools and training to accomplish great things. To that end, CollegePlus has a special offer we’d like to present that is available for our friends at Homeschool.com. This special offer is available during the month of September.
