Do We Need a Dedicated Homeschool Space?

How Can We Organize our Homeschool Space?

Staying organized is a key aspect of ensuring success in your homeschool, but where to start? We know that not everyone has the space for a designated homeschool area but, don’t despair! If you don’t have room for a dedicated homeschool space, making an area work “double-duty” is just fine! Though it may be a bit more challenging to keep everything organized making your homeschool “mobile-friendly” can help a ton!

  • Create a backpack or a mobile cart for each child with all of your homeschool essentials!
  • Keep everything in the same place so it’s easy to find when it’s time to school!
  • Use an online homeschool program to save “book space.”

The wonderful thing about homeschooling is that you are able to make choices based on what works best for your own family. Some people do this by designating a particular area to be used only for homeschooling. Often this is a room, an attic, or even your basement. Anywhere that you have available space could work! There are many benefits to having a dedicated homeschool space.

  • Everything stays in one spot which makes it easier to keep track of books, supplies, and projects.
  • Students know that when they are in this room/area it is time to do school work.
  • On the other hand, when they are not in that room they know it is time for free time or chores.
  • If one student needs a quiet place to study away from siblings this would be the perfect place to do so.
  • There are fewer distractions if you choose one room or area to be used for school work.

Get a Homeschool Space Started

For many people, the kitchen table is where most of the sit-down learning is done. Depending on the weather a picnic table outside is a nice change. On especially nice fall or spring days, a trip to the park to do school work followed by playing on the playground is a nice incentive to get things wrapped up. Taking advantage of nice weather to do your school outside is a nice way to include in some “unschooling” while kids explore outside.

Wherever you choose for your family to accomplish your homeschool goals, there are endless ways to keep it organized. Keep in mind the old phrase “a place for everything and everything in its place”. 5 tips to Stay Organized in Your Homeschool Space

  1. A calendar or “mom binder”. This will help you keep track of appointments, assignments, and outside activities. This really is a necessity to keep things going smoothly.
  2. Containers- Finding places to put all of your homeschool stuff. It is really helpful to have a place for each subject and project you may be working on. The ideas for this are limitless- baskets for library books, an unused buffet to contain art supplies, a file cabinet to keep track of each individual student’s records.
  3. Bookcases- Can you really have too many of these?
  4. Go Digital- Online resources and online tools like the ones Google has can really help in your homeschool. Make sure you have a place for a computer to be used in your homeschool and check out this homeschool online organization post!
  5. Use Workboxes- I cannot say enough about how helpful these are especially with younger students. They also make it an easy way to take school on the road!
