Adventuring
With Children: An Inspirational Guide to World Travel & the Outdoors
by Nan Jeffrey
This book is a parenting book, as well as a travel book. The author describes
the benefits of adventuring as: "living simply, becoming self-sufficient,
experiencing new cultures and ideas, challenging your mind and body, being in
harmony with the natural world, learning to have patience and tolerance and
contentment, and developing an unassailable 'joie de vivre.' Best of all it
fosters an interdependence within the family, one that encompasses all ages as
you work towards a common goal." Nan and her family should know. Together
they have hiked, bicycled, sailed, and canoed throughout the world.

Where
Should We Take the Kids?
This book is a great resource for traveling families. Two versions are
available, one
for California and one
for the Northeast. You may be surprised how often you use this book. It
comes in very handy for finding local caverns, nature walks, and State Parks.
The nice thing about a travel book (compared to the Internet) is that you can
take it with you. If you are traveling to California or Oregon, bring this book
along on our vacation and follow their advice for parks, beaches, hotels, and
restaurants.

Best
Hikes With Children
by Bill McMillon
We used the "Sacramento" version, but there are books for other areas,
too. Every week we pick one of the hikes in this book for our "Field Trip
Friday." We have hiked through meadows, a walk-through horse ranch, and to
vernal pools. The publisher, Mountaineer Books, is a non-profit conservation
club whose mission is "to explore, study, preserve, and enjoy the natural
beauty of the outdoors. . ."

Home
Exchange Vacationing
by Bill and Mary Barbour
Home Exchanges seem like an ideal way for families to explore the world. Instead
of hopping from hotel to hotel (spending lots of money and constantly telling
the kids to quiet down), you get to stay in a house. If you are exchanging cars
as well as homes, your only expense will be the airfare. The authors interviewed
people who regularly exchange their homes and found that the process is not as
scary as you might think. They say that by the time you work out all the details
of the exchange (having spoken on the phone several times and written numerous
letters), your exchange partners feel more like friends than strangers.

Ranch
Vacations
by Gene Kilgore
Ranch vacations are a good way for families to explore the great outdoors--from
the comfort of a hotel room. Ranch vacations usually include horseback riding,
fly fishing, barbeques, and outdoor programs for kids. According to the author,
"These vacations are not inexpensive, but they are so unique the memories
last a life time."
