And just like that, summer is almost over! It was a magical season filled with loose schedules, picnics in the park, road trips to see Grandma and Grandpa, afternoons at the pool, and lots of time playing outside. Now it’s time to start getting back into the swing of things, but not too quickly. I like to ease back into our homeschool routine, so it doesn’t feel like such a shock to the system after a busy summer. One thing I always do (mostly for myself rather than the kids!) is create a back-to-school checklist. It helps me stay organized and makes those first few weeks of homeschooling feel much calmer and a lot less chaotic.
Here’s my Ultimate Back-to-Homeschool Checklist.
Choose my curriculum and learning resources
One of the first decisions I make is which resources will support my kids’ learning this year. Our curriculum forms the foundation, but I also incorporate supplemental tools that provide extra practice, reinforce key concepts, and help my kids build confidence at their own pace.
IXL is my favorite supplemental learning tool because it works alongside a variety of homeschool curricula. My kids have access to more than 20,000 PK–12 skills across math, language arts, science, social studies, and Spanish. Its Real-Time Diagnostic identifies each learner’s current level and creates a personalized action plan, while recommendations guide them toward the skills they’re ready to learn next. I can also track their progress through detailed analytics, making it easy to celebrate growth and identify areas that may need additional review.
Choosing resources that complement one another helps me create a learning experience that fits each of my children’s unique needs and learning styles.
Set goals for the year
Once I have our learning resources in place, I take some time to think about what I want our homeschool year to accomplish.
Academic goals are an important starting point, but they’re only one piece of the picture. I also think about things like encouraging more independence, building stronger study habits, spending more time reading together, or making room for hands-on projects and field trips.
I like involving my kids in the goal-setting process because it gives them ownership over their learning. I also remind myself to keep our goals realistic. They don’t have to be set in stone, and I’m not afraid to adjust them as my children grow or their interests change throughout the year.
Build a routine that works for your family
One of my favorite things about homeschooling is the flexibility. Instead of trying to recreate a traditional school day, I build a routine around our family’s schedule and the way my kids learn best.
Some of my children are more focused in the morning, while others hit their stride later in the day. I’ve found that shorter lessons with movement breaks work well for younger learners, while longer periods of independent work are better suited for older kids.
Our daily routine usually includes:
- Morning reading or journaling
- Core subjects on IXL before lunch
- Outdoor play or physical activity
- Independent practice
- Creative projects or electives in the afternoon
I also remind myself that our routine doesn’t have to be perfect from day one. The first few weeks are always a chance to see what’s working, what’s not, and make changes along the way.
Review core skills before starting new lessons
Before we jump into new material, I like to spend a little time reviewing what we learned last year.
We’ll read together, practice math facts, write a few journal entries, or revisit concepts that could use a quick refresher. I’ve found this helps my kids ease back into learning while showing me where they might need a little extra support.
I also like using IXL’s Real-Time Diagnostic at the start of the year. It helps me see where each child is currently performing and recommends skills based on what they’re ready to learn next. That makes it much easier to focus our time on the areas that will have the biggest impact.
I’m not trying to reteach an entire year’s worth of material. Even a short review period helps us start the school year feeling prepared and confident.
Organize your learning space
I don’t believe a homeschool space needs to look like a traditional classroom. For me, the most important thing is having a comfortable place where my kids can focus and where everything is easy to find.
Before the school year begins, I make sure we have notebooks, pencils, art supplies, and books (I love CarsonDellosa.com for this, as they have such a wide variety!), and any technology we’ll be using throughout the year. Spending a little time organizing everything now saves me from constantly searching for supplies once lessons begin.
Simple storage bins, bookshelves, and rolling carts have made a huge difference in helping us keep everything organized without needing a dedicated homeschool room.
Prepare yourself, too
This is probably the reminder I need most.
It’s easy for me to spend all my energy preparing for my kids and forget that I need a little preparation too. Before the school year starts, I update our family calendar, think through meals and activities, and try to set realistic expectations for the weeks ahead.
I’ve also learned that homeschooling rarely goes exactly according to plan, and that’s okay.
One of the greatest gifts homeschooling gives our family is the flexibility to adapt. If something isn’t working, I can change it. If we need a slower day, we take one. Giving myself permission to adjust along the way makes the entire year much more enjoyable.
Start the year with confidence
My back-to-school checklist isn’t about creating the perfect homeschool year. It’s simply a way to help me feel prepared before we dive back into our routine.
By choosing our learning resources, setting goals, creating a flexible routine, reviewing foundational skills, organizing our space, and planning ahead, I know I’ve done what I can to give our homeschool year a strong start. Having IXL as part of our routine gives me confidence that my kids have personalized practice and support whenever they need it, while helping me keep track of their progress throughout the year.
If you’re getting ready for a new homeschool year, now is also a great time to try IXL. For a limited time, you can save 25% on an IXL membership and start the school year with one more resource to help your family learn with confidence.
Every homeschool journey looks a little different, and that’s one of the best parts. With a little preparation and a willingness to adapt, I’m ready to enjoy another year of learning, growing, and making memories with my kids.
