ASL Virtual Academy

Description

ASL Virtual Academy’s American Sign Language classes are designed to build signing skills so students are confident signing with a Deaf native signer.  It’s centered around ASL mastery and the proper use of the language.  Proper use of ASL goes well beyond basic vocabulary memorization and dives into how to structure a conversation (ASL grammar).  The class also explores the richness of Deaf culture for a full class experience.

Obtaining these skills requires time and effort, but we have the whole journey mapped out for the student.  It’s a comprehensive class, “a real class” with a course syllabus, and a curriculum that’s aligned with the national standards of language learning.

Course design is primarily asynchronous where students learn in a self-paced format through engaging pre-recorded video lessons.  Additionally, students will participate in fun and interactive activities to help them practice what they’ve learned, with many opportunities to demonstrate signing skills.   There are a variety of assessment tools including quizzes, tests, signing assignments, practice activities, review games, and practice conversations.  All grading and assessment is provided by ASL Virtual Academy, with access to grades 24/7.

The self-paced format helps students with master and progress through materials at a pace that is comfortable to them.  We don’t have a “seat time” requirement to finish the class.  Instead, students finish the class once they complete all course materials.  We also don’t have required times students must log in, so adding this class is really easy to fit into your busy schedule.

All students are assigned an enthusiastic ASL teacher who is responsible for answering student questions, grading their assignment submissions, and encouraging their progress throughout the class.  Though the class is primarily asynchronous there are synchronous (live) activities where students can interact with their teacher, classmates, and Deaf native signers through Zoom.  All live/synchronous sessions are scheduled around student availability and interest.

We offer an open enrollment where students can start and finish the class at any time throughout the year.  Currently, there are 2 years worth of ASL (ASL 1 and ASL 2).  However, the self-paced nature of the class allows students to complete 2 years of curriculum in less time if they progress more quickly.

The classes are most suitable for high school students, and high achieving 7th/8th-grade students interested in high school credit.
