American School offers accredited middle school and high school courses at an affordable cost. Students may complete full years of courses and ultimately earn an accredited high school diploma, or they may take individual print or online courses to enhance an existing homeschool program.

Since its founding in 1897, American School has been a leader in distance education, serving more than three million students in all 50 states and more than 65 countries worldwide. Many of those students, including bestselling author Christopher Paolini and actress Jessica Alba, have gone on to become famous, but American School gives each student personal attention in distance education, allowing the student to work at his or her own pace and offering detailed feedback on every graded exam.

American School now offers elementary school studies. The goal of the American High School Early Learning Academy is a new and unique learning experience to help children build a strong foundation for future academic success by providing engaging educational curriculum that supports Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st and 2nd Grade.

For students in grades 6-8, American School debuted middle school courses in 2016 and expanded the program in 2018. Currently, a full year of middle school consists of five units of credit at a cost of $900 with monthly payment plans available. Each year includes one unit of credit in English, math, science and social studies plus one elective. Most individual middle school courses cost $300 for a full unit of credit and $250 for a half unit of credit. Courses are available in print or online, and more information is available at

For students in grades 9-12, American School offers two distinct diploma programs. If you plan to join the workforce or attend a community college after graduation, consider the General High School Program. More information is available at American High School. If you plan to attend a four-year college or university after graduation, consider the College Preparatory Program.  No matter which program you choose, a full diploma program consists of 20 units of credit and costs $3600 with monthly payment plans available. Most individual high school courses are $300 for a full unit of credit and $250 for a half unit of credit, with select courses and AP courses priced differently.

In addition to honors and AP courses, American School offers world language courses powered by Rosetta Stone and elective courses in fine arts and business, career and technical education. Together with core subject areas such as English, math, science and social studies, American School offers hundreds of accredited courses in total.

Whether you choose to enroll in a full year of courses, a full diploma program or simply one course, American School’s tuition includes all study materials, grading by qualified instructors, access to the Online Student Center and much more. Students work at their own pace, but they are never alone. American School staff is available to assist students during normal business hours, and all phone calls and emails receive a reply within one business day. The dedication of our staff is one reason why the American School is accredited by the Middle States Association/Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), Accreditation International (Ai) and the National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA) and is recognized by the State of Illinois as a non-public school.
