American School has been a leader in distance education for 120 years. For most of that time, American School offered only traditional paper-based courses in for students in grades 9-12, but now American School offers much more, including online high school courses, online exams in paper-based courses, online middle school courses, honors courses and AP courses for high school students, all of which ensure that students in grades 6-12 can learn in a way that is most comfortable to them.
Over the years, American School has educated more than three million students from across the country and around the world. Many of them, such as bestselling author Christopher Paolini and actress Jessica Alba, have gone on to become famous, but all of our students enjoy the benefits of what we call our Four C‘s—curriculum, caring student service, credibility and cost.
After you are accepted at American School, you can earn your accredited high school diploma faster than you ever thought possible—up to twice as fast as classroom high schools—by choosing either of two distinct diploma programs, both of which consist of 18 units of credit from our innovative curriculum.
If you are planning on attending a four-year college or university, consider our College Preparatory Program. Students in the online College Preparatory Program complete 13 required courses and have room for 5 electives. More information on the College Preparatory program, including a list of required courses, can be found at www.americanschool.org/collegeprep.
If you are planning on going into the workforce or attending community college immediately after graduation, consider our General High School Program. Students complete in the paper-based General High School program complete 13 required courses and may consider taking business, career and technical education courses among their 5 electives. Students in the online General High School Program complete 12 required courses and have room for 6 electives. More information on the General High School program, including a list of required courses, can be found at www.americanschool.org/generalhighschool.
In total, American School offers more than 100 high school courses, many of which are available in both paper-based and online formats. A full list of courses is available at www.americanschool.org/courses. Included in those courses are online world language courses powered by Rosetta Stone. We are proud to be affiliated with Rosetta Stone, and more information about those courses and that affiliation may be found at www.americanschool.org/rosetta-stone. More information about all of our online learning offerings may be found at www.americanschool.org/online-learning.
Included in those online courses are middle school courses for students in grades 6-8. Those students may take those courses collectively as part of a full-year program or on an individual basis to enrich an existing homeschool program. A full-year program consists of 5 units of credit and costs $1000. The 5 units of credit include one credit each in English, Math, Science and Social Studies and an elective of the student’s choice in one of the four subject areas above or in Careers, Fine Arts or World Language fields. Individual courses cost $200 each. Currently American School offers middle school courses only in an online format, but paper-based middle school courses are in development and should be available during the 2016-17 school year. For more information, visit www.americanschool.org/middleschool.
For students in upper grades, we are pleased to introduce Advanced Placement courses. These rigorous courses will give students the opportunity to earn credit toward a high school diploma and eligibility to take an exam in the spring which may reward them with college credit. AP courses will be offered in English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Fine Arts and make an excellent addition to one of American School’s diploma programs. More information may be found at www.americanschool.org/apcourses. Honors courses not considered Advanced Placement are also available.
Students work entirely at their own pace, but they are never alone. American School tries to make distance learning as personal as possible. For example, our instructors write personalized, handwritten comments when they grade exams in paper-based courses, and our staff is available during normal business hours to answer telephone and e-mail inquiries. The dedication of our staff is one reason why the American School is accredited by the Middle States Association/Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), Accreditation International (Ai) and the National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA) and recognized by the State of Illinois as a non-public high school.
American School’s status as a non-profit school allows us to keep costs to an absolute minimum. As of August 1, 2016, a full 18-unit paper-based diploma program, including all study materials and grading of exams, costs just $2250, and flexible monthly payment plans are available. Prices for students residing in a foreign country are slightly higher. A full 18-unit online diploma program costs $3600 no matter where you live. In addition, American School offers free evaluations of transcripts from high schools in the United States and offers pro-rated prices if you need fewer than 18 units of credit to earn your high school diploma.
If you desire to take American School courses to enrich an existing homeschool program, you can do that, too. The cost of individual high school courses usually runs between $150 and $300.
