Calvert Education offers various education options for homeschooling families. These include Calvert Classic homeschool program and individual courses, and Calvert Academy, an online private school. You can choose the best fit for your family; they all use the same, proven curriculum.

Each course from Calvert, from Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, includes 160 lessons, with 20 review lessons. Calvert Education uses a blend of traditional textbooks and online learning (I appreciate the combination) and starts with a solid foundation of reading, writing, and arithmetic. That foundation is then layered with history, science, music, geography, and the arts.

The Calvert curriculum is built on the principle of subject integration. For example, a Fifth Grade student studies the Civil War in history. At the same time, the student interprets Walt Whitman’s poem “O Captain! My Captain!” about Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and drafts a composition entitled “A Civil War Battle”. I like this—as study across subject areas develops higher-order thinking skills and promotes content mastery. As homeschoolers, we do it all the time with unit studies.

Calvert’s lessons also include instruction in Computer Skills and Applications. These lessons guide you and your child through animated, hands-on activities online where students learn computer-based word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software skills. The skills acquired in the lessons are then practiced through assignments in other subject areas (subject integration again).

Calvert offers a supportive community for their families as well. The Calvert Facebook page and closed Facebook Group (search “Calvert Homeschool” on Facebook) are active with current and former families that readily share their homeschool knowledge with others. In addition, the Calvert blog provides informative articles that touch on subjects of interest to the homeschool community.
