Tips for Senior Year

“Tips for Senior Year”
by Homeschool.com’s Rebecca Kochenderfer

Most likely, your high school SENIORS intend on having the best year possible! After all, they’ve waited three years to finally call themselves homeschool seniors which means graduation is just around the corner! Below are some tips for having the best possible year as a homeschooled senior.

Apply to College Early

Ideally, your students will apply to college before the summer (prior to senior year) ends. That way, your students will beat just about any deadline – including early decision deadlines – with plenty of time to spare. This extra time will allow them to construct a well-written, thought-provoking admission essay and they’ll have time to find someone to edit/proofread it. What could be better?

Relax and Enjoy Yourself

Yes, we did say relax! Senioritis is a real thing and isn’t something to be taken lightly. It’s not a good idea to let your students wait until senior year to take challenging courses. It’s also not wise to let them pile on a super-heavy workload in hopes of raising GPAs. A couple more As (say, for two classes) isn’t going to drastically raise their GPA. Those two classes, however, definitely can be the last straw for your students. Homeschool senior year will already be full of heavy burdens just because it’s their last year. There’s no need to pile extra stress on top of that.

Prepare for Departure

Preparing your homeschool seniors – and yourself – for their departure is probably one of the biggest things you’ll do this year. Of course, for some families, going away to school isn’t even an option. For those who do have the option, it’s something to build toward. Perhaps it would help if you let your seniors stay the night away from home for a few days or even a week at a time to help you (and them) adjust.

Your students’ senior year is likely to be one of the most exciting times of their lives! Make it a year to remember by sticking to the tips we’ve offered. Above all, help your homeschooled senior go out with a bang; they will cherish this year for many years to come.
